On the 4th – 7th April 2016, Parliament hosted the 4th Pacific Women’s Parliamentary Partnerships Forum at its temporary Chamber at Tuanaimato, Gym 2. The forum began with an official welcoming ceremony and was followed by an Ava Ceremony hosted by His Highness, O le Ao o le Malo and the Speaker of the Samoan Legislative Assembly. Discussions and presentations began on 5th April and ended on 6th April. This event was held in collaboration with the Federal Parliament of Australia.
The Forum was well attended by women Members of Parliament from the Pacific Region. It targeted the capacity development of women Parliamentarians with an overarching theme of ‘Womens Economic Empowerment’. Presentations were made from officials from the Asian Development Bank and some local and Pacific women in Chief Executive Officer positions in various Government entities. Discussions were held on various issues such as Women and Business in the Pacific and ideas for reform and the types of support Parliamentarians could provide. Also discussed was how to support women in the informal sector and how the government could assist.
The forum was officially closed on the 7th May with the next Forum to be later confirmed by the Increased Political Participation of Women in Samoa (IPPWS) project.
