Parliament hosts another College Programme during Budget Debates

Whilst Parliament was engaged with discussing the Main Estimates for 2017/2018, the Office of the Legislative Assembly hosted its 5th Parliamentary Awareness Programme for College students. Colleges from Upolu were invited to attend and a total of 80 students (from Years 9 to 11) and teachers in the relevant fields participated.

The Programme included having students and teachers witness Members discussions on the estimates, staff of Legislative Assembly presentations on the powers and importance of Parliament in a democratic system, face to face discussions with the Prime Minister and many more.

The Programme concluded with a Samoan speech competition between Year 11 representatives of colleges that attended.

Lefaga College for the second time took the Speaker’s shield as the winner for the 2017 Parliamentary Samoan Speech Competition.

The College Programme is an initiative by the Office of the Legislative Assembly to educate the younger generations of the importance of parliament in turn increase engagement in Parliamentary work.
