The Office of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly (OCLA) hosted the third Parliamentary Youth Programme from 11th – 13th August 2015 at the Maota Tofilau Eti Alesana Building, Mulinuu.
Mr Speaker, Hon. Laauli Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt delivered the opening address, where he reminded the participants of this great opportunity to observe and learn about the different functions of the Parliament, Parliamentary procedures and processes, as well as the support services provided by OCLA for the Parliament and its members. The PYP2015 focused mainly in church youth groups, by which 60 youths from 8 denominations were registered for this year’s programme.
The three-day programme allowed the participants the chance to sit in Parliament and observe the Parliamentary Session. Participants also had the chance to meet and hear from the prominent leaders of Parliament; the Prime Minister, Hon. Tuilaepa Fatialofa Auelua Lupesoliai Neioti Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi, the Leader of Opposition, Hon. Palusalue Faapo II and the Honourable Speaker of Parliament. During this meeting, the Leaders stressed on the importance of the Three Arms of Government and the importance of the law making arm which is the Parliament.
On top of hearing various presentations from OCLA staff, participants also had the chance to tour different office divisions, in order to fully understand the services provided for by the Legislative Office to assist Parliament. These sessions prepared the participants in the final activities of the programme, the Committee Submission and the Mock Parliament.
The Honourable Speaker in his closing remarks again acknowledged the presence of the Youth, especially to all Church Leaders for allowing their Youth to take part in this significant programme. In his final words, he urged the participants to make use of their time in Parliament and to pass on their knowledge to those who could not attend.
The Office of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly will continue to provide more engagement programmes in the future.
