The Office of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly (OCLA) hosted the 4th Parliamentary Youth Programme from 23-24 August 2016 at the temporary Parliament precincts, Tuanaimato.
The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Leaupepe Taimaaiono Toleafoa Faafisi in his opening address stressed on the importance of the programme, which gives youth the opportunity to learn about Parliament, its functions, members & committees, procedures and processes, as well as the support services provided by Secretariat for Parliament and its members.
A total of 43 youth from selected youth groups participated in this year’s programme. On the first day, participants observed the first part of the parliament session followed by an opportunity to meet and hear from the Leader of the House, Hon. Tuilaepa Auelua Fatialofa Lupesoliai Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi. Furthermore, presentations were provided by OCLA staff on different aspects of Parliament and concluded with youths exchanging opinions on the Citizenship (Mock) Bill 2016, as part of their Committee Submission activity for the Mock Parliament. The programme culminated the following day with two hours Mock Parliament activity, whereby all participants took part and engaged in debates on the same bill.
The Deputy Clerk, Tofa Leatisa Uitime Tala acknowledged the presence of the youth, and also expressed thanks to their youth group leaders for their continuous support in allowing their members to take part in the Parliamentary Youth Programme 2016.
The Office of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly will continue to provide more engagement programmes in the future.
